I wanted to add that I read that most of the neighbor run ins in Switzerland are in regard to the laundry room.

I am not surprised one little bit.

Hi, Linda!
I don't blame your mother for being upset.

In our building you can use the room on another person's day but you must ask them first to be sure they don't need it.

We have one neighbor that has a washing machine in her apartment and is constantly hanging her clothes in the laundry room to dry even if she knows that myself and two other mothers need all the lines because we only wash once a week.

She would even push my clothes over on the line bunching them up to hang hers all nice and neat.

After the landlord talked with her she has stopped and it is so nice and calm in the building laundy room! :)

I don't know how your mother did it. Six weeks is just silly.

Hi, I am an American and I live in Reston Va. I just found your blog and am enjoying it and came across this post on the laundry problem. When I was 4 years old our family lived in Switzerland in a small town outside of Basel. We lived in an apartment house and you were only allowed to use the laundry room once every 6 weeks. Naturally, there was a lot of time when no washing was being done in the laundry. My mother attempted to use the laundry when it was empty and this caused a huge row. So I came across your post and really had to laugh. When I lived in NYC, there was a laundry room in our apartment building but of course no schedule. My mother was angry that the schedule left the room unused most of the time and she had to do almost all of the washing by hand. That was about 50 years ago!
Love your beautiful pictures of a lovely country.
