Second opinion

I have called a local immigration lawyer that was refered to me by the Dayton bar association.  My father is totally financially responsible for Vilay if he decides to sponsor Vilay.  However, I was told by the lawyer that they have never heard of this being enforced.  For example, if Vilay were in a car accident and required long term care the hospital would never know about my father’s obligation.  The CIS cannot release this information due to privacy laws and the hospital would simply bill Vilay or myself.  Vilay is not able to get food stamps or any public assistance until he has worked in the U.S. for at least five years.  So, in brief this whole sponsor thing is stupid.

The lawyer told me that family immigration is a huge part of the issues with immigration that Congress doesn’t want to deal with.  There really is no reason for the sponsor requirement in regard to family members of U.S. citizens to be able to live in the U.S.  It was a requirement from several years ago that no one wants to deal with.

During my search on the internet I found out that we are luckier than legal residents who have foreign spouses and children living in another country. It takes up to five years to get them over to the States and during this time neither the foreign spouse or children are allowed to enter the U.S.

I think that this is something that is worth fighting for.  I am going to organize a group of people to write and protest against all unfair family immigration laws.  I am outraged that families are being kept apart because Congress is too lazy or unwilling to fix the problem.  There is no reason for this not to be fixed.  More importantly it is against basic human rights.

If you would like to help, please, email or write your Congressman.  It is an extremely important issue.
