My husband says when he came back about age 12 to the U.S. after several years in France, he would use swear words at his American teachers and of course, they didn't know what he was saying! :-)

Its so good to hear your voice and see you on video! I feel like I know you so much better.

When I first started learning Spanish the older kids who already knew it would tell me, "Say this," or "Say that," and of course it was some kind of swearing or whatever. It took me a while to see what they were doing...after a few people looked at me like, "Julie!"

That's too funny! I remember when I first got to France, one of the first things that happened was a cat adopted me. It would come in through the window and wouldn't leave, so I finally went out and bought a litter box, food, and toys. About three or four weeks in, I had to get more food and the man at the shop didn't speak any English or Spanish so I was forced to use my French.

"Ma chatte" I started out. The Frenchman looked confused so I began describing her, using the only words I knew, hoping he'd realize I needed cat supplies: "ma chatte" is soft, is white, likes to be pet.

When he finally realized I was describing my cat and not my, well, lady parts, he did me a big favor. He found a picture of a cat on some food and said "LE chat" and made me repeat it. LE chat. LE chat. Then he raised his hand as if to excuse himself and brought his finger to my fly: "LA chatte" and made me repeat it.

THAT was a mistake I never made again.

When I first started speaking French, I said things like "Couilles Saint-Jacques" and "Est-ce que tu pourrais baiser le volume?", "j'aimerais du preservatif sur mon biscotte." etc. You seem to be able to laugh about it and go on, and that's *so* essential to being able to finally speak any language with confidence :-).

You are absolutely right. However, somehow everything sounds beautiful in French.

When I cuss in French it doesn't seem so harsh. I think it is because it isn't my mother tongue. I think the best thing is to not use them at all. Well, at least until my temper takes over and I am not reasonable...then it is the F word every other word. :)

Actually the reason I didn't translate it on the video is because it is a little more about where you are doing it than what you are doing! ;)
