StatCounter was founded by Aodhan Cullen at the age of 16

The Irish Web analytics company, StatCounter, was launched in 1999 by Aodhan Cullen at the age of sixteen. Based in Dublin, StatCounter is an online service that allows clients to see the number of hits their website receives (including return visitors), the pages viewed, keywords and search engines used to find their website and the geographical location of their visitors.

Cullen, 24, recently won BusinessWeek’s 2007 young entrepreneur (ages 25 and younger) contest. Click here to read about how Collen started his first business at the age of twelve and what led him to create StatCounter at sixteen.

I’ve used his service since 2003 and it is by far the best. But I’m amazed to now know he’s only 24… Very cool!

I think it is the best service out there for free as well and I couldn’t believe he started it at 16.

I wonder how statcounter could have be “launched” in 1999 when the domain was actually registered in 2000. That just doesn’t add up. Y2K bug? Not too good for a counter site!

Actually I like sitemeter or gostats or even maybe google analytics (although google analytics is nearly impossible to use). statcounter was good in 2003 – IMO it’s crap now! :P

I don’t know about the domain name issue…but, I do think that StatCounter is as good as Sitemeter…I use both. I haven’t tried gostats. I would have to say I totally agree with you on google analytics.

I went to check out gostats…the only problem is it doesn’t seem that I can make my stats private (unless that is with an upgrade?). I keep that private not because of me but because I don’t want to share my visitors information for their privacy.

I have verified my email address with gostats and that seemed to open up more control. That was confusing in the beginning. I have taken another look at the website and gostats does allow me to make hits private and even pick and choose what I want to be private. Gostats actually gives you more control over privacy than other counters. So, I am giving them a go.
