The Jura in Spring

Our mountains are blooming with Spring.
We are taking nightly walks as we did before the snow. The children run in the fields along the road and search for hidden treasures in nature while Vilay and I talk about how much we love it here.
Here are some of my favorite photos I took:
The train as [...]

Confession of an expat

I have just realized that each time I feel isolated here in the Jura it is because of something going on with my neighbors.
In the States, I would have simply thought I have bad neighbors. However, since I am an expat in a new country it is too easy to in a sense blame [...]

Socializing in Switzerland

I have done some research online about socializing in Switzerland since my last post describing how I continuously stick my foot in my mouth while socializing in our village.
My biggest mistake:
Here in Switzerland you do not talk about personal subjects where as in the States we are fairly open with people.
Once or twice, I have [...]

The foreigner

Is me.
My small village is smothering the life out of me.
I know I will never fit in this village.
People in this village know each others families even two villages over.
Swiss that move here from other areas of Switzerland (even the French speaking parts) are treated like foreigners.
Here. In our village, I have no friends. [...]

Park fun in the mountains

The snow that had fallen during the night melted quickly against the sunlight.

Half an hour later, we made it to my favorite park. There are only two swings and a slide. But, the [...]

Confrontation

I confronted my Bosnian neighbor today.
I told her she did not have the right to put her clothes up in the laundry room on my day.
She told me she could use the drying racks because the racks were not mine.
I asked her if the racks were hers and she said no. I knew that they [...]

Winter refused to leave

Snow rests on my mountains.
Spring is napping off in other parts.
I am watching small flakes of snow drifting slowly down past my living room window. The smell of carrot bread baking in the oven warms the apartment.
The children are playing on the floor. Lunch is over. Dishes are done.
I am sipping [...]

Toétché recipe

Toétché is a speciality of the Jura canton of Switzerland. It is a cake but it is not sweet. There is no sugar called for in the recipe. However, it is very good.
In the past, we have bought half of a large toétché at the bakery for quatre heure (snack). One [...]

Biel-Bienne

We went to Bienne last Saturday. We found Spring waiting for us all pretty in pink!

Swans were gliding through the water at the lake fighting for their lunch. The swan in the photo below was even carrying some bread crumbs on his back for later.
