WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

When I first thought about moving from Blogger I checked out WordPress and set up a blog there for free. It is even called From my French window. The reason I never used it was that at that time it was not possible to add your own buttons or pictures to the sidebar. All I could do was update the blogroll. Well, I was not happy about that.

However, it seems that lots of others complained and it looks like this may have changed. I just popped over there and looked at some of the new blogs created on wordpress.com. These blogs have been customized with buttons. I don’t know if you can hack the colors or anything else to personalize your template more. The templates are very beautiful and the dashboard (admin area) is just unbelievable. WordPress is just simple to use and cool as all get out. I definately would recommend switching from Blogger to WordPress. Keep in mind I am not sure how much you can hack the templates and if that matters to you.

I would suggest visiting wordpress.com and checking into it yourself. I am going to either delete the blog I have there or use it for photos. I don’t know. Using a WordPress blog hosted by WordPress is a great way to enjoy the beauty of WordPress without paying. Geez, I just said WordPress three times in one sentence! The best thing about a WordPress hosted blog besides how easy it is to use is that it is free.

I may not have bought my own domain name if I had known that I could now (like I said it seems WordPress now allows this) add buttons like for technorati, etc. to my WordPress blog hosted by WordPress.

However, it only cost me 10 bucks in the end instead of 20 bucks like I had thought to add my domain onto my husbands Bluehost account. Bluehost allows up to six domains on an account with one being free. So, now I have my own domain which is kinda cool. If you are interested in setting up your own domain I recommend you take a look on WordPress.org and check out their suggestions for a host.

There are many opensource (free) blogging platforms out there but I like WordPress the best for the ease of use for a non techie person like me. If you are thinking about setting up a blog on your own domain you may want to shop around at Drupal, Movable Type (no longer free), and many others that are free. It is important to find one that fits your needs and level of knowledge in regard to CMS. You can even test drive most of these platforms by going into a dummy blog set up for this purpose.
I am going through all the old comments that were posted at From my French window’s old address with Blogger and copy and pasting these comments back into the correct post at this new address. I can’t afford spending another 20 bucks to make a “donation” to Haloscan so that Haloscan will allow me to transfer the comments over. I understand that Haloscan is a company and it is fair that I have to pay to get my comments freed. However, I am not happy just letting all those wonderful comments that all of you have taken the time to write sit at Haloscan instead of here where the comments belong. It may take me some time to do this but it is important to me. So, over the next weeks you will see five months of comments appearing like magic all over this blog! :)

Finally, I am trying to figure out a way to make it easy and pleasurable to view all my travel and family photos separately from postings. I may just end up using Flickr but I don’t like the idea of my family photos being viewed by the millions that use Flickr. I may create a mini photo alblum inside or connected to the blog for the family photos. I am checking into all the possiblilities like adding Coppermine to the blog. All this is a project for next month. If you have read some of my old posts from my travel blog that I transfered here, you are probably wondering where the pictures are. Now, you know it is me being indecisive as usual. I will add some photos but not all into the posts by the end of this week. I have many, many beautiful pictures that I would love to share with all of you.

Welp, gotta go and round up the stinkers for a some lunch and then a nap. Sweet Bear is on break from school over the next couple of weeks. The first day she was off wanted to go to school and I had to explain several times that it was closed. The past two days she hasn’t mentioned it. She has been playing non stop with her sister and now they hate naps!

They were good during this posting…I only had to get up about five times to fish them out of rooms they are not allowed to be in. And, I only broke up one fight between the girls. My stinkers are starting to stink less.

UPDATE: I checked out WordPress blogs hosted by wordpress.com and I think it is still the same as before. You can’t get into the template which is no fun for bloggers! But, go see for yourself.

I do have Wordpress (free)through wordpress.org, but it is through my own domain (not free) and hosted by Bluehost (not free).

Wordpress also offers free blogs through wordpress.com. I tried one of the blogs out about four months ago but never did anything with it because I could not get into the template. Like on your blog you have books and music images that you added into the template. On a wordpress blog hosted by Wordpress I dont think you can get into the template. When I wrote this earlier I had looked at some of the blogs hosted by them and it looked like these bloggers had added buttons and images to the templates. However, when I signed into my old blog I could not get to the template. So, I dont know how these people added their images and buttons…maybe, I missed something. That is why I added the part at the end about checking into it yourself. I am lost as to what you can and cannot do with a wordpress blog hosted by wordpress.

My blog is mine. I can do whatever I want to it except that I dont know how to do anything with templates except add buttons and images. ;)
