I just turned on Cartoon Network for the kids.
I heard, “You jerk!”, coming from a characters mouth. Immediately, I had a sense that something wasn’t right.
It took me a couple seconds to realize it was because the cartoon was in English and not translated into French. It is the first time after living in Europe for four years that I have seen that.
It must be a mistake.
My four year old daughter, Petite Clown, caught it right off. She asked me, “Why are they talking like us?”
It can’t be a mistake because as I am typing this we are watching the second cartoon in English. All the commercials were in French but the cartoons are in English.
Weird.
But, nice.
It felt like I was back in the States for a moment with American English wrapped all around me.
AHHHH….English. My English. Home.
Third cartoon, in English! What is strange is that the credits are written in French but there are no subtitles in French. And, the characters are talking in English!
I am at a loss but very happy to have my kids watching cartoons in English!!!

I tried to search on Google as to why the cartoons are in English but can’t find anything.
I did find Cartoonito which is a British television channel for preschoolers in the UK. Cartoonito is in English and French. The things we find through the powers of Google. :) The website has educational videos for preschoolers in French. If you have young children that you are trying to teach French to or are like me with bilingual kids, it is a great resource for learning French or English for that matter.
That is cool. I’m not sure if I noticed that but it’s probably great for the girls from time to time! :)

It seems that ‘cartoon network’ broadcasts in ‘bi-canal’ meaning you can either listen in v.o. (’version originale’)or in french. You can activate this simply by pressing the ‘mono/stereo’ button on your remote. BTW, all six or so national swisschannels do broadcast in ‘bi-canal’, which is a pretty cool thing. Therefore most, if not all sitcoms and movies are available in english..
